I've been wanting an African name for years. Or even just an African nickname would suffice. Yet, my ASL sign-name stayed even after several years and multiple Deaf language communities. After a text message yesterday, I was struck with the realization that I DO have a spoken language African nickname... and have all this time... My Amharic name is Betaniya  - which is really not that different, but has emotional roots now when I hear it in a different context. :-)
